Frequently Asked Questions

Do you have an intake form?

Yes, and you can find it here. You are welcome to print it, fill it out ahead of time, and bring it to your first appointment. You can also just come a few minutes early and fill it out. If we haven’t seen you in more than 12 months, we’ll ask you to fill it out again.

What should I expect?

At your first MFR session, your therapist will spend a bit of time getting to know you, finding out your goals and expectations, and answering any questions you may have about MFR. They will also assess your posture and structural balance as a starting place for treatment. Afterward, they will likely give you some homework, which usually involves some gentle self-treatment releases or exercises to maximize your results.

What should I wear?

MFR is performed on bare skin, but being fully undressed is not necessary. Unlike the undressed-and-covered-up approach of most bodywork, our aim is to facilitate movement and freedom. The best attire is a two-piece bathing suit or loose shorts and tank top or sports bra for women, and loose shorts for men. And because MFR is performed on the skin, please refrain from using any lotions or creams on the day of your visit, as this will make treatment difficult.

Do I need a prescription for care from my doctor?

In the state of Oregon, you do not need a prescription to see a Physical Therapist or Massage Therapist. If you would like to submit payment to your insurance company for reimbursement, however, your insurance may require one.

Is Myofascial Release covered by my insurance?

Many insurance plans have Physical Therapy or Massage therapy benefits. However, we do not process insurance payments.  We are able to give you a bill indicating the treatment you have received in order for you to submit it to your insurance company.

How will I feel after the session?

Many people experience a feeling of relaxation and relief, with a decrease in symptoms or increase in range of motion. You may have an increase in physical, mental, and emotional awareness. As we work together through restrictions, you may experience varying types of sensations. There may be times that symptoms are temporarily increased, you may feel nauseated, lethargic, or fatigued. Do not be alarmed! This is a part of the larger healing process, where your body is rebalancing. People experience healing in a variety of ways. Discuss this with your therapist, as this will continue to progress you along your healing journey.

How long is each session?

Your new patient appointment will be 90 minutes to allow time for us to get to know you and understand your goals. Follow-up sessions are available for 60, 90, and 120 minutes. Most people notice significant changes within three or four sessions. It is particularly effective to group sessions as close together as possible to make the most progress (such as 2–3 treatments per week). Many people receive several MFR treatments within a short time to address a specific concern, and then find themselves receiving “MFR maintenance” sessions every few months.

What is the cancellation policy?

We require 48 hours advance notice for any change or cancellation. If you choose to reschedule or cancel an appointment within this time period you will be responsible for 50% of your appointment cost. For changes or cancellations on the same day as your appointment or if you fail to come to your appointment without any prior notification you will be responsible for 100% of your missed appointment. These charges will be issued as a bill and due upon receipt or payable at your next scheduled appointment. If you have a health, family, or transportation emergency please contact us as soon as you are able to so that we may attempt to fill your time. If your appointment can be rescheduled in a timely way, your therapist may decide to waive the late cancellation or no-show fee. Patients with excessive late cancellations or no-shows will be asked to prepay for future scheduling.

What do treatments cost?

The cost for MFR therapy is $150 per hour. So a 60-minute session is $150, a 90-minute session is $225, and a 120-minute session is $300. We also offer multiple therapist treatments starting at $300.

How are payments taken?

Portland Myofascial Release utilizes a direct-pay model. This means you pay us directly at the time of service and get an invoice, or “Superbill,” that you can submit to your insurance company and be reimbursed at the out-of-network rates. You can contact your health insurance company to find out your level of out-of-network benefits. Portland Myofascial Release accepts payment in cash, credit, or debit card (Visa, MasterCard, American Express), and ApplePay or AndroidPay. If you have further questions, please feel free to contact us.
